What are some good social-distancing party games to play with a few friends online? For people who don't usually play pc or console games? To play while video-chatting and drinking. Something like trivia/quiz games or simple tabletop/board games maybe?

28F looking for friends to play tabletop games, board games, DnD, MtG and Ultimate Werewolf with. I'm online everyday from 1PM to 1AM PT. Would love to make lots of friends!

Hey!!!
I'm playing Ultimate Werewolf and other board games on Discord tonight via voice chat and would love for you to join me! All you need to play is a microphone, discord, and the ability to talk to play. We start playing at 6PM PT and go well into the night so you can join in starting at 6 O'clock PT. Games last about an hour to 2 hours depending on how many people come to play. We expect the games to be at 6:00PM, 8PM, and 10PM.
Ultimate Werewolf is similar to a murder mystery, Town of Salem or Mafia if you played those. It's a fun social game where we talk, chill and point fingers at each other and see who is lying. If you like to lying or playing a detective this game is for you!
But if you haven't played those games this is the gist:
We are a town of villagers who have been the target of Werewolves. The town is composed of regular villagers (Vanillagers), werewolves, and special villagers. There are two phases, day phase where the town tries to lynch someone they believe is a werewolf and night phase where the werewolves kill villagers and the special villagers with super powers get to use their powers to save the village. The Village wins if they kill all the werewolves and the werewolves win if they kill enough villagers to reach parity.. It's a fun Social Deduction game.
I also do play board games on boardgamearena, tabletopia, tabletop simulator and use other websites as well. If you ever want someone to play a game with you I am on almost everyday to hang out and talk or to play games with so I invite you to message me even if you are not available today! I'm online usually from 1PM to 1AM PT everyday!
I have found a DM for DnD I just am looking for more people to join me!
Please be 18+, LBGTQ friendly, and have a mic!
Stay safe out there.

When the party is 50% edgelords

So, this story was thankfully a short experience due to the edgelord not being in the campaign for more than two sessions, but with the way I write things, this post is gonna end up long anyway. However, I think it's an interesting one because it involved two edgelords both being in a party at the same time, kinda.

So, we were running an online short term 5E game. We are currently between campaigns and had a new player join our discord server and show interest in playing with us. We figured a short campaign of about ten sessions was a perfect way to get acquainted. Things were made very clear from the start that this would pretty much be a comedy campaign as our last campaign had a very dramatic and emotional finale and we wanted to cut loose for a bit. It's also worth noting that this player is new to our group but not to tabletops or even DnD. They claimed quite a bit of experience under their belt and, based on how they built their character and knew the rules well, I'm inclined to believe them. I mention this only because it seems to unbelieveable later.

There were five of us in total. Our DM who I hadn't seen DM before but they were a great player and turned out to be really good, throwing themselves into every character and 100% commiting to the terrible but incredibly entertaining character voices. Me, playing "Skeebles", a goblin cavalier fighter who rode on the back of a blink dog. The blink dog was quite a coward and would occasionally teleport out of danger, leaving the rider behind. My friend, playing "Oliver" (was insistent on the pronunciation "O-liv-ee-ay"), a high elf wild magic barbarian who believed themselves to be a powerful mage like the rest of their family. Our former DM, playing "Black Kain", a drow assassin rogue who wore a dark cloak and spent most of their time brooding. We were surprised by this due to the DM's nature and the comedic setting. We had never seen them play a PC either, so there was some doubt about whether or not this is how they normally played. Still, they had been an excellent DM so we waited to see. The new player, on the other hand, we knew nothing about but still seemed to have hit the cliche perfectly. They were playing "Donec Mors " (which is literally latin for "Long Death") a fallen Aasimar grave cleric who was an initiate in a death cult, sent out to hone their skills before becoming a fully fledged member. I think they played a cleric because we mentioned that a healer would be nice but I don't think they ever did any actual healing.
Despite our trepidation, we were excited to see what the DM turned player and new player had to offer. Session one begins and we have been hired by a king to commit accounting fraud. That might not sound that interesting but it was based on a really fun idea. The concept was that dragons were attracted to gold so accountancy was an important role in any kingdom, making sure too much gold is never stockpiled at the same place. Our job was to destabilise a kingdom by sneaking gold into their royal vault. A reverse bank heist, if you will. It was important that we made sure no one knew that we did it, or they would remove the gold before the dragon arrived. Therefore, we made a plan to make the heist look like a botched assassination attempt on the queen.

On the way there, we talked a little. Oliver and Skeebles became good friends quickly, bonding over stories of great battle that they were both lying through their teeth about and trying to one up each other. Donec was silent, answering any attempts to talk to her with dismissive grunts or one word answers. Kain also seemed quiet but eventually talked. In fact, once we spoke to them, they began to talk way too much. They opened up about their horribly complex and ridiculously tragic backstory almost immediately and how they only desire to get revenge on a comically long list of enemies. Me and my friend pretty quickly figured out that this was an ironic stereotype and played along, laughing as we did so. A particularly funny sequence was Kain talking about how they drank poison in small amounts to become immune. Oliver and Skeebles both demanded to see this trick and, with edgelord confidence, Kain downed a whole bottle of his own poison. He spent the next few hours throwing up and trying not to cry (unsuccessfully.) Surprise! He's not a real edgelord, I clickbaited you. Sorry.
So, everything was good, mostly. New player was still not really interacting but we figured they were just getting their bearings and weren't yet comfortable with RP. Perfectly understandable. I won't get into the details of the heist much but at some point we had to split up, half of the group would fake the assassination while the other half would deliver the gold below ground. Donec made their first real characte decision and firmly insisted on being in the assassination team. Alright, no problem. Skeebles wanted to fight the royal guard and so chose to be in the assassination group. Kain was better at sneaking and Oliver was convinced that their ‘spells’ could help them break into the vault so they went below.

While the other two were sneaking their way in, Skeebles and Donec both had to force their way into the throne room and loudly shout a proclamation for the queen's head. We get into fighting and Skeebles focuses on kiting the very strong royal guard around. I wasn't trying to fight them of course, we had no chance. But we needed to delay. Donec, on the other hand, had alternative ideas. Rather than helping, she allowed Skeebles to be a distraction as she rushed at the queen. She used her Path of the Grave to give the queen vulnerability and then next turn tried to cast Inflict Wounds on her. However, queens have royal mages, who counterspelled it and started battling the cleric. Skeebles was getting ready to run soon but wouldn't leave their companion behind. He kept shouting that it was time to go and the plan had 'failed.' Donec was not leaving. In fact, they weren't even fighting the mage. They were focused on trying to kill the queen exclusively which led to the mage putting them down quickly. Skeebles ran in to help Donec but got surrounded by the guard and abandoned by his dog, who ran out of the palace. We were captured. Now, that was dumb, sure, but it wasn't unsalvagable. We were only captured and the actual gold delivery had worked without detection. Now our companions just needed to rescue us before we were forced to spill our secrets.

Session two starts with Donec and Skeebles being placed in a dungeon below the palace. Skeeble's dog finds the others and manages to indicate that something has gone wrong. They use her sense of smell to locate them and sneak back into the palace again, making jokes about the security as they go. They locate us and there's a rescue which was fun but I won't go into details. Finally, we're out. Time to go back and report to the king of the opposing nation that it all worked.
So, we're set to leave the city after a nights' rest. That's when Donec disappears. As our characters sleep (in an alleyway, since taverns seemed like a bad idea, Skeebles is actually quite at home but Oliver hates it. Kain says it reminds him of life as an orphan after he lost his second family) Donec sneaks away, us all failing our perception rolls to notice. We awake to the news that the queen was attacked again by the same assassin. This attempt apparently went even worse, unsurprisingly. The would-be assassin was due to be executed at midday. Now, logically, the crew should just abandon her. She's clearly a liability and, with upcoming execution, it seems like the queen wasn't bothering to interrogate her. But, we didn't want to just abandon our new player. So we were struggling between what we wanted to happen as players and justifying it as characters. As we were discussing this, Donec's player speaks up and gets very angry. She demands to know why we won't save her. We ask why she ran back in again. She says "Because you can just save me when I fail." We notice she doesn't seem like she regrets her actions and ask her if she plans to attack the queen again if we rescue her. She answers with a yes. We ask her why, in the name of whatever death god she worships, she finds it so important to kill the queen. She answers with, I shit you not, "Because bringing death is the essence of my life." We go, okay then, we're not going to save you if you will just get yourself killed intentionally. She says several unfavourable things that I'd rather not repeat and promptly leaves the server.

Thankfully, we didn't have to find a way to kill her character since it was literally already scheduled. The party attends the execution out of amusement and we make, perhaps too many, jokes. Particular favorite of mine is Oliver stating, right after she is decapitated, "Huh, looks like death was the essence of her death as well."
The rest of the campaign was tons of fun and we're setting up for the next long term one. However, we have not forgotten our brave fallen companion. "Because bringing death is the essence of my life" has become a staple in-joke of ours and we often use it when we are asked for an explanation on just about anything. Let us all pour one out for the terrifying acolyte of death with a total inability to read the room and understand that we were making fun of edgelords like her.
Thanks for reading <3

Lockdown 3.0 Things to do, plus help and support.

Disclaimer I want to thank everyone for the gilds, replies and suggestions. I just do not have time to reply to everyone, but I am reading everything. I am not sure how much bigger the thread can be, I already typed this but it vanished so I think I'm at the limit. I will try to keep updating, but I don't expect the thread to be up top for much longer and will likely vanish soon, so if you need anything save it.
Yes, it's hard, it sucks, it's depressing. It is something we all have to do if you want to see this virus go. Everyone knows the deal, too many think they're the exception but no one is. However, staying home is hard so maybe I can help at least one or two people with some incentives. I'll try to give links to some things that can help cure the boredom, and some support if you need it.
Most of this might be obvious to some, some might not even have internet and of course, money is a big issue, so I'll try to give some suggestions:
For streaming and on demand things such as Netflix et al, don't forget you can subscribe for free for your first month. This goes for most things in the list. If you are worried about putting in your payment details and forgetting to cancel a month later, don't worry! You can sign up and immediately cancel and you still get your free month!
For people who don't have a smart TV, you can buy a cheap Amazon Fire TV stick or a Roku box. The Fire stick can go as low as £20 often for 1080p. It will drop to £30 for 4k.
I picked up a 4k Roku device for £18 on Amazon once. It's fast and snappy. currently it's going for £33 for the 4k version. Having both, there is little difference between the devices. NowTV also do their own roku powered device.
Subscription based streaming sites that all offer 2-4 weeks free for first timers
  • Netflix *According to comments the second month is free.
  • Amazon Prime You can either get Amazon video on its own, or take prime with other benefits. I strongly urge those who use Amazon for buying off their store front to use [https://smile.amazon.co.uk/] as there is literally no difference except everything you buy amazon donates to a charity of your choice.
  • Now TV (I believe it's 7 days)
  • Disney+
  • Britbox
  • Amazon channels. I believe you can get all these individually but Amazon offers them as channels bound to your prime account, and they are again either free for a couple weeks (again, take them, cancel instantly) or very cheap. I recently subscribed to Starzplay for £1 for 3 months. It has some good shows on it like Fringe, doom patrol. It also has channels like Curiosity stream and shudder
If you have not subscribed to the any of the above, you can get a few months of free TV by signing up and cancelling instantly. I suggest waiting at least 5 minutes just to let it go through the system.
Some tips for Now TV. IF you already have a subscription, I've noticed you can get it cheaper by cancelling. When you cancel they will beg you to stay. Select "I can not afford it this month" and they should beg again, telling you what shows they have. If you say you still want to cancel, they'll beg one last time and offer you the subscription for cheaper. This won't work every month, but I've noticed they'll always offer it the first time, then again after a couple months. If you're subscribed to both films and entertainment do the most expensive one as it may not work both times (but it might!). You can also pick up passes from storefronts a lot cheaper sometimes, before I could pick one up on Amazon for £3 but, they seem to have cracked down on it. If you shop around (or if anyone knows of a legitimate store please let me know) you might be able to pick it up cheaper. Lastly, check their website and under your account they should have an "offers for you" section.
Completely free TV
If you do have a smart TV and/or device, there are some good free streaming apps. One I really love is called PlutoTV. I know this is on both Roku and the fire stick, as well as Ps4/Ps5 and xbox.
Pluto offers a bunch of live channels and now an on demand section, all for free. It has adverts but they are actually short (shorter than regular TV and fewer of them). Some of the channels are just streaming certain shows like Mythbusters 24/7 or Dog the bounty hunter, but it has a lot of old movie channels as well as 24/7 kickboxing and MMA. It also has a 24/7 poker channel I quite like.
Another one I like is Rakuten Viki however, I haven't watched it for a while as my fire stick is only 1080p and I have too many other devices attached. I believe it is on Roku but you have to jump through some hoops and have an account. The last I checked on the fire stick you did not. Viki offers a metric ton of Asian shows, mainly from Japan and South Korea but it does have chinese, Malaysian etc. It has subtitles. Some Japanese shows are hysterical, albeit weird.
Roku also do their own channels with free shows if you own a device.
For those who don't have a smart TV or a Streaming device, you can set up your own computer as a dedicated streaming device with Plex. It's been a while since I used it but I believe it now also offers free movies and TV.
Anime
If you are into Anime there is
The first 2 are free to watch, or offer premium without ads which you can have a trial with. Crunchyroll is the better of the two with more original choice for Japanese voice and subs, while Funimation has more Dubs. I don't believe HiDive is free to watch but you do get a 2 week trial. These are more exclusives than the previous two.
PC Centric software
If you are a gamer or like Audiobooks or anything that uses computers for things like music making, programming or graphic design
Humble Bundle offers, as per the name, bundles. A long running site that got bought out by IGN. It offers both single items and bundles you can buy individually/as a pack while also offering a separate monthly subscription for around £8-9. The subscription gives you 12 games on average per month. That's the simplest explanation but it changes somewhat as sometimes you get to pick 10 out of 14 games, or get all 12.
Humble bundle offers more than just games though. Every Tuesday they bring a new bundle of games, while Thursday (I "think) a new bundle of books. They very often have books from the Black Library giving you a ton of Warhammer books. Sometimes it's standard E-books, other times it's audiobooks. A few times a year they do bundles for graphic design, a typical bundle would include programs like Paintshop Pro Corel Painter etc, They usually go for £0.76 for tier 1 up to around £18 for tier 3, which would include 4-6 full titles with 10+ addons. They also often have Music making bundles or video editing software as well as Programming or video game development.
The bundles change often, they usually have around 11 bundles at a time that last for 20 days. Sometimes it's trash but they do often have some very good deals.
Fanatical offers the same as humble bundle except usually not as high quality, but sometimes they do have some incredible deals, and they are very very cheap.
Both humble and fanatical are safe, trusted and been around a long time, and they are NOT grey market key sites. They work with the publishers and developers. You can buy games both old and new for a lot cheaper than you would most other places. Unless it states otherwise, keys are usually for steam.
**BOTH HB and Fanatical (HB much more common) offer free games fairly often. The catch is linking your steam account to them (at least HB). It is safe however.
IndieGala is another site like above. Except, these are much much lower quality. However, they offer a metric ton of free games. Quality is low but it is legitimate, and a lot of free stuff.
Game Store Fronts
  • Steam This one is so obvious I didn't add it, but apparently many want me to. It is the best out there, and you can find almost everything, with fantastic deals.
  • Greenmangaming offers games cheaply. Again, not a grey market site (which are legal but unethical) and they sometimes do bundles.
  • GoG (Good old games) is a DRM free site run by CDPR, the makers of the Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk. They offer you games quite cheap and not needing DRM (such as Steam, Uplay etc which is less invasive versions of dodgy DRM from the olden days).
  • Epic Games Despite the controversy whether you care about their rivalry with valve, they offer free games ever week. Without ever having bought anything I have gained over 170 games. literally. Good games for the most part. They often give you £10 coupons as well.
  • Twitch Everyone knows twitch, but if you don't, it's a streaming service for watching gamers and girls with low cut tops accidentally bending over in front of the game. However, if you're signed up to prime, you get free games each month (and randomly between the set bunch).
  • Playstation Store Currently has January sales. Currently the free games for PS+ are for PS4: Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Greedfall. For the Ps5 it is Maneater
  • Games with Gold Bleed 2 and the King of Fighters XIII is available until Janurary 15th whilst little Nightmares is available until January 31st.
Gaming Subscriptions
Like the TV versions, you can sign up to these for a free trial (or very cheap). If you do sign up to only one at a time, it should keep you busy for a few months
  • Xbox Game Pass You can do this on both/either an Xbox or PC. If you sign up to the regular one, you can get a month (maybe three!) for £1. After you have done that, you can sign up to the premium version for 3 months at £1 a month. Most people know game pass, but you can download a large selection of games for free. The premium version gives you games with gold, allowing you to keep the games forever (but can only play with a subscription)
  • Ubisoft+ I'm not 100% sure if you get a trial or not. This allows a large collection of Ubisoft titles to play for £12.99 a month. Quite expensive but good if you like Ubisoft titles I guess.
  • EA Play EA's version. Goes by a ton of names I think, EA Access, EA Play, Origin Access etc etc. There's a couple of versions of this, and it is across all platforms (PS4/5, Xbox, PC) but not sure about the switch. I "think" the premium allows you to play on all platforms, while the cheaper one on a single platform, but I may be mistaken.
  • PS Now a once terrible service that is now actually very good. Allows you to download some Ps4 games to your PS4/5 and lets you stream a massive amount of Ps2/3/4 to your PC or playstation.
There's more like nvidia's service but you need the Shield device which is quite expensive. I'll leave it at that.
Audiobooks & Ebooks
  • Audible Not sure what the current deal is but if you are a prime member you can sign up for a trial and get a free Audiobook each month for 3 months. Some warhammer books are 48 hours long, 3 of those gives you a good 100+ hours of listening!
  • Comixology Another Amazon company, but lets you download some free comics I believe.
  • Marvel Unlimited No experience with this. ItFuckingWont wanted me to add it. A subscription service for Marvel.
Education
  • Sign Language BSL here No experience myself, suggested by n21brown and asked for a few times. Didn't know SL was so popular! Listed as "Pay what you can"
  • BBC's Bitesize here is apparently good for home learning. Again, no personal experience.
If you need some spare change
Okay, I don't generally bother with it, but maybe some of this could be useful to you. These are NOT a quick way to make a fortune. These are small things you can do over time for a bit of pocket change
  • If you have prime you can get a FREE FIVE POUND GIFT CARD by literally just streaming a song from Amazon music (which is included in prime) here is the details According to the comments it's only for select people, but it's worth trying If the link doesn't work for you just google "Amazon £5 coupon music"
  • Now, these sorts of sites have been around for years, I haven't used any other than talkInsights which I must have signed up to 10-15 years ago. Basically they send you surveys and you answer them. They are confidential and don't ask for personal details in the survey. You need 2000 points and you get £20. During the pandemic they've slowed down but I probably get around £40 a year. Not much I know, but it's an email followed by a quick survey ticking boxes. Depending on your answer sometimes you get screened out, I'm not telling you to lie but just be consistent with your answers and you should be able to work out how to not get screened. Some emails are only worth 20 points, others 200. It's slow to get to the 2000 but very quick to just answer a few questions.
  • Apparently beermoneyuk is a good sub to make some pocket change with.
  • There is also matched betting. I have never done this, I don't have the patience but from what I've read, it's legitimate, it works and you can make a fair amount of cash from it so long as you do it correctly, and there's a ton of guides. I mention this because people stuck at home could get into it and as long as you're careful (I.E not entering in the wrong numbers) it's risk free AND it pisses off the betting shops. It seems people in comments have had success with it. Disclaimer A couple have complained about gambling. This arguably is not gambling. If you are susceptible to addiction do not do it. However, it's argued that there is no fun or buzz in this, and it's a very tedious and time consuming thing. Others argue you can't make the same money anymore (People were making thousands, now only hundreds if that). It's risk free providing you know what you're doing, the risks are user error, such as entering the wrong numbers. Someone pointed out that due to the lockdown, bets could potentially be cancelled due to sport stopping. So use on a side of caution. We're (mainly) adults so I'll leave it up just because this doesn't have the excitement of regular gambling.
  • Microsoft Rewards This is an easy way to make pocket change doing very little. Most people have a MS account. The rewards program offers you numerous ways to grab points, by playing free to play games, answering small questions (you don't even need to answer most of the time, just open the link and shut it) and by using bing and searching on it. I've gotten 20k points JUST by answering questions over a couple months. There are many rewards but you can grab a £5 gift card for 6k for example, or a month of game pass (and AFAIK you can make points playing the games)
  • Google rewards Someone mentioned this in the comments. I have not used it, so can not give any input on it. Sounds similar to TalkInsights which I linked. Google states "Complete short surveys while standing in line, or waiting for a subway. Get rewarded with Google Play or PayPal credit for each one you complete. Topics include everything from opinion polls, to hotel reviews, to merchant satisfaction surveys. We’ll notify you when a survey is waiting."
That's it for now. I will try to update as I go along. A long post but I hope that it can help some of you with finding something good to do that's free, cheap or a bargain. I do suggest getting prime, especially since you get free music, free delivery, free TV and music and free video games each month. In fact, there's a ton of perks and I feel I've gotten way over the cost investment.
Hope it helps someone at least
PartTimeCrazy said if you bought an Apple product you get 3 free months of Apple Arcade and Apple TV free for a year
fakehunted is upset I didn't mention wanking. Tesco have 225 sheets of Tissue for £0.75!

I'm not a doctor! But if you're a smoker, something I strongly suggest is to quit. I struggled for years but in the first lockdown I quit, technically. I haven't had a cigarette since, however, I do that silly thing millennials do. I vape, but, it made quitting extremely easy. I would not have been able to do it if it wasn't for 88Vape They sell extremely cheap liquids at £1 each. You can find these in B&M but you can pick up 25 for £20 or buy your own mix.
Vitamin D deficiency has been said to be a big problem for the virus. I'd suggest (again, not a doctor!) that you pick some up. Tesco do a 3 for 2 deal. So you can pick up 270 tablets for £7.
If you are vulnerable you MIGHT be able to phone tesco and get put on their delivery saver list (currently it's paused but phoning may help. At the very least they might give you a priority slot. I did this for my mum, we didn't shop at Tesco but I phoned for her, and they put her on with no hassle, so she can always get a delivery.
HELP & ADVICE
The lockdown Rules.
Reasons to leave home include:
  • Work or volunteering where it is "unreasonable" to work from home. This includes work in someone else's home, such as that carried out by social workers, nannies, cleaners and tradespeople
  • Education, training, childcare and medical appointments and emergencies
  • Exercise outdoors (limited to once a day). This includes meeting one other person from another household in an open public space to exercise
  • Shopping for essentials such as food and medicine
  • Communal religious worship
  • Meeting your support or childcare bubble. Children can also move between separated parents Activities related to moving house
I want to add, if you are in danger you are also allowed (and must!) to get away from the situation for some reason, BBC seems to have missed this very important thing (or I am blind)
Support
FOR THOSE SHIELDING YOU CAN CONTACT THE ROYAL VOLUNTARY SERVICE. These people helped my mother with picking up her medicine from the chemist. They were very helpful and went out their way to keep in touch and do it immediately. (It's the only experience I have with them though)
_riotingpacifist wanted these links added, but I simply just don't have the time to vet and check all the suggestions here, so I will link as is:
Update:
Digital Art
These are Free
  • Krita Arguably the best in my opinion. It has a load of options, brushes and a decent UI. It works fantastic with a tablet.
  • Gimp This is a decent program but last I used, the UI was a pain, and it isn't so user friendly while misses features, but it works, and it is possible to do some incredible creations on it.
  • Medibang Paint This is slightly geared towards Comics and Manga. I really enjoy using this with my drawing Tablet. As far as I know, it also for regular tablets for Android/Ipad and is free.
You can pick up a drawing tablet on Amazon quite cheap these days! Small ones that are just a black slate such as the wacom ones are good but takes some practice to get use to, but very worth it if you can't afford a dedicated drawing tablet with a screen.
Office suit software
A couple of free applications for word processing, spreadsheets etc.
  • LibreOffice This has most the average user would need to write their own books or to work from home. There's not a huge amount of difference between the two I'm linking (since I last used anyway) so it's more for preference.
  • Open Office You can pick this up here and again, like above it's just preference.
Music Making
I'm going to direct to matthewharris806 for some links as all the programs I've used like Reason are expensive, or cheaper stuff in bundles such as Magix software.

A Treatise on Magic (a.k.a. Some overly-long thoughts on 2e's divisive magic design and how its reception proves people may not be against the idea of Linear Warriors/Quadratic Wizards as much as you might think)

Around October 2019, I had one of those rare online discourses that actually stuck with me. I remember it vividly because I did it while bored in an apartment room during a massive work trip along the east coast of Queensland (I’d also ironically interviewed remotely for the job I currently have). In the 5e subreddit, I was discussing with someone who said they felt magic in PF2e was weak. It was a mostly cordial discussion with some good back and forth, but there's a moment and subsequent discussion that stood out to me.
At one point, we were discussing how magic in 2e is balanced. I explained my reason for why I supported the way it is: because if magic eventually overtakes martial characters as the primary driving force in the gameplay, those martial characters no longer have a reason to be there. I said if you believe the way magic is balanced in systems like DnD 3.5 or 5e is good, then you're essentially saying you think magic should be more powerful and purposely eclipse the mundane and martial fighters.
They started their response to that with a blunt 'well…yeah, it should.'
I would be lying if I said such a blatant admission didn't take me aback. I was used to people defending magic in other d20 systems with some bad-faith cop-outs like 'martials technically deal more damage' or 'it only matters if you powergame' or 'other characters can still be useful'. But this was the first time I'd ever seen someone outright say yup, it just should be better on principle, no ifs or buts.
They explained that the whole point of magic is that it's supposed to be better than the mundane. It's very nature is extraordinary and supposed to eclipse that of which is possible to do with physical means. They believed the power curve of older editions made sense; that martial prowess was more expedient and magic started off weak because it required more training and study, but that magic should eventually eclipse martial powers because the reward for riding out that initial lack of power is far greater.
It was an interesting debate that I really enjoyed despite our differences of opinion. When discussing martial classes and how players could justify falling back on them despite being weaker than spellcasters, the other user agreed there was a discrepancy, but said it was more a result of d20 games becoming this general pop culture amalgam than any design issue. Barbarians want their Conan fantasy and rogues with their Assassin's Creed or Han Solo fantasy, but even in those respective settings, magic was seen as a tool used by the mighty and sought after specifically because it was all-powerful. Those characters’ mundaneness in the face of that power was the point of those narratives. You can't reconcile those thematics from a game balance perspective in a system that lets the good guys have magic as well; you can play Han, but Luke will always be more powerful and ultimately significant because he has the Force at his command. Link will always be the valiant warrior leading the charge against Ganon, but the legend is ultimately about Zelda because she has the magic that seals away the evil; Link is just the vanguard to save or protect her while she does. Martials just have to accept they'll still be better than the average person, but never have the raw, reality-bending power of spell casters.
And thus we came full circle back to 2e, where the user I was discussing with said even if magic is the most balanced it's ever been in a d20 system, it was ultimately a flaw because it doesn't feel good, because magic needs to be all-powerful to fulfil its purpose. What's the point of learning baleful polymorph if it only transforms the weakest of foes you could just kill with a sword? What's the point of scaling successes if most of the time they get the success effect and get slowed for only one turn instead of one minute? And even if it's still technically helpful, what's so great about a +1 modifier to all rolls when you could get a full-fledged advantage roll instead?
Of Balance and Fun
This has been a topic I've been wanting to tackle for a while, because as someone with a hobbyist-level interest in design (and a forever GM), game balance is a big topic of interest for me, and 2e - being one of my favourite d20 systems - has had a...contentious consensus on its very carefully balanced design, especially in regards to how it’s handled magic and spellcasting classes.
So to begin, let’s talk about...well, the basics of design. I've always considered the trinity of gameplay, balance, and aesthetics to be the holy grail of character and class based games. To clarify my definitions:
Any discrepancy in this trinity causes lack of satisfaction. Bad gameplay is obviously the key bane and the chief concern, but being able to both have mechanical balance and let all class fantasies work in the context of those mechanics is important. After all, I think most gamers these days have had a moment they realise a class or character they’ve invested in is not considered optimal or viable, and they have to make a choice to either continue playing sub-optimally, or shelve that fantasy to play a more effective option.
That said, balance alone does not automatically equal fun; pulling down a powerful option to make others strong doesn’t necessarily make a game more enjoyable. If anything, it will often bring down what enjoyable elements exist in a game for an almost bureaucratic conception of fairness.
One of my favourite videos on the subject of game balance talks about the issues of designing around balance at the expense of fun. If you haven’t seen this video yet, I suggest you watch it; it’s an amazing analysis that breaks down the fine dance between making compelling and fun gameplay, while also not letting metas stagnate into dull experiences for players and viewers alike. It focuses primarily on fighting games, but in many ways, its analysis of high-intensity staples of the genre such as Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting and the MvC series can draw parallels to the insane power caps and system mastery reward of TTRPG systems such as DnD 3.5/PF1e.
The video draws a fairly logical conclusion; people find powerful options fun, and the more options you have, the greater your toolbox to solve challenges when they arise. So combine power + options, and you have a recipe for what’s both a deep and satisfying gaming experience. And as the video title suggests, if a playable option isn’t holding up, the solution isn’t to ruin the fun of the people enjoying the successful options; it’s to improve those weaker ones and bring them up to the same level. Nerfs that need to be applied should be done only when those powerful options and strategies have made the meta toxic and/or unfun (like Bayonetta made Smash 4, or the basketball example for why they introduced the shot clock), or minor tweaks that actually enable interesting and/or expressive gameplay (like the example they gave about Ryu's heavy Shoryuken in SFIV, and the 3-point line in basketball).
But that’s exactly the opposite of what Paizo did with 2e: they nerfed spellcasters, not with targeted finesse, but wholesale and across the board. Yes, they buffed martials too, but nerfing spellcasters has set the precedent for the overall gameplay tone of the system far more than anything else as far as class design goes.
So the question stands: if it’s better to buff than nerf, did Paizo fuck up by bringing the power level of spellcasters down? Have they sacrificed fun upon the altar of balance?
Of Wizards and Warriors
This seems to be the idea a lot of people have when it comes to spellcasting in 2e. Some people accuse spellcasting of being 'weak' in this edition. Bluntly, it's not true; I won't spend too much time discussing it because regular forum-goers know the dot points, but the TL;DR is magic is overall less powerful than previous d20 systems, though ultimately still useful. Spellcasting classes are generally best as buffers, debuffers, and utility. Damage is possible, but much less consistent than martials, with casters generally being better at AOE and having easier access to energy damage to exploit weaknesses. Scaling successes mean you have a wide berth to have results, but enemy saving throws will consistently scale with player levels, making it easier for them to get the better end of those saves than in other editions, particularly in higher end/boss encounters.
So anyone who's extensively played the game and is looking with an objective eye will tell you that spellcasting is perfectly fine as far as viability. If anything, it's the most balanced it's ever been in a d20 system.
But as we've established, balance =/= fun, at least as a default. There are some salty sammies that say they don't agree casters are balanced, but digging into their wants leads ultimately to the desire for a 3.5/1e level of power, wanting to be a damage carry over a team player, or even that they agree it's balanced but it doesn't feel fun. Just because it's balanced logically and numerically doesn't automatically appeal to the pathos; if anything, logos and pathos are often at odds with one-another, appealing to different situations between different people.
So that raises the question: what exactly is it that people want from spellcasters, both as a character fantasy and mechanically? Are they fine with spellcasting being on par with martials, but just don't like the specifics of 2e's design? Is their fantasy about being that all-powerful reality bender, thus being mutually incompatible with that idea of balance?
Or is it possible there is a dissonance between what players want…and what they think they want? Do players think they want a d20 fantasy system with martial and magic options balanced, but in truth their disdain towards 2e’s design is because their internal bias leans more towards the idea of magic being innately superior, much as my fellow Redditor I was discussing with?
Pathfinder 2e has been one of the most interesting, albeit unintentional social experiments in tabletop gaming. For decades now, the concept of Linear Warriors, Quadratic Wizards has been seen as a sore spot in a lot of RPG systems, both digital and tabletop; the idea of physical fighters starting strong and progressing moderately, but will eventually be overtaken by magic users, who will start weak but eventually eclipse other classes in raw power.
But for all the talk about spellcasters eclipsing martials, there's always been this underlying implication that it's a bad thing; that it's a failure of game design to balance magic against martials and the mundane. In reality though, trends seem to favour the opposite; people love using magic as an expedient method of solving problems, far more effective than combat or skill checks if possible. Powergamers froth over the idea of magic being able to break the game in stupidly powerful ways; there's a reason 3.5/1e is still held in high esteem for d20 system mastery. And then there are people like my friend at the start who just believe even outside of mechanical reasons, it makes more sense thematically to make magic more powerful because it should be in principle; that it feels right for it to be.
Combine that with people who struggle to find martials engaging in any way more than being attack bots (loathe as I am to open that can of worms, one of the common points brought up during discussions of those recent, contentious videos was how martials are notoriously difficult to create interesting design space around in d20 systems), and it begins to make sense why some people resent the design decisions Paizo made in regards to 2e.
But coming back to the original question I had - did Paizo make bad decisions with 2e's game design? - I think it’s reductive to suggest they made a mis-step and that they didn’t think about the design implications of their decisions. If anything, there is a very clear-cut appeal and design goal for why not only they made magic weaker, but implemented systems like their encounter design budget, level based proficiency, and DC scaling:
To enable challenge.
Giving Sauron the Death Star
The problem with an uncapped system is that it trivialises any challenge you find. High level 3.5/1e games famously break under the strain of spellcasting potential, turning the game less into a series of challenges you need to overcome and more a sandbox for which your demi-deific wizard treats serious, life-threatening choices with the gusto that most of us reserve for when we're deciding what to eat for lunch. Even 5e, while less offensive in the Linear Warriors/Quadratic Wizards divide, still struggles to present a long term challenge, as the balance is inherently weighed in favour of the players, and that bias only gets stronger as they level up. This is less a spellcasting exclusive problem as much as a general one with the system, but the game still favours magic that hard disables or instantly solves problems over raw damage and skill checks once it passes a certain point. Sure, the rogue can lockpick a gate, but why bother when the wizard has Knock or a teleportation spell prepared?
As the writing convention goes, if you give Frodo a lightsaber, you have to give Sauron a Death Star. The problem is that convention breaks down if Gandalf is there and he is able to just cast a single save-or-suck spell that banishes the Death Star.
Paizo have not nerfed magic because they hate spellcasters or have some rigid idea of balance = fun. It's because they realised as long as magic exists in the way it has in other editions, the game will always be in a state where challenges will eventually become trivialised by raw power. Sure, poorly balanced martials and skill monkeys will trivialise combat and skill checks respectively, but never in the same all-encompassing way magic can, and magic will always step on their niches more than they'll step on magic's. The result is…well, Angel Summoner and BMX Bandit. It makes sense why they targeted magic specifically, and so strongly.
(I also feel there’s a joke somewhere in there about the strength of summon spells in 2e)
The BIG question, of course, is if this is what players actually want? A power-capped game that presents forced challenge?
I'd say for me, it is. As a GM, I love that challenges can be scaled to any level and still present a genuine obstacle to my players. I love how traits like incapacitation mean players actually have to face powerful threats instead of insta-winning with a save-or-suck spell, with scaling successes a more elegant solution than something clunky and blunt like legendary resistances in 5e. And as a player, I like the cerebral challenge of picking which spells to use against certain foes, analysing them to figure out their weak saves and how I can exploit them. I tire of how binary and absolute my wizard is in 5e, and actually wish I could have the 2e experience without the hard fallback of save or suck to guarantee expedient victory.
But for a lot of players, that understandably isn’t what they want. To many, the thrill of casting a paralyse or banish or polymorph or force cage to disable a powerful foe like a dragon or fiend is the whole reason they play spellcasters. The one-sided brokenness of spells isn't a bug, it's a feature. Whether the appeal comes from the mechanical satisfaction, the fantasy of being an all powerful spellcaster, or a combination, it's in these instances when 2e's design is mutually incompatible with those wants.
I think this is the key thing to consider when discussing magic in 2e are these points. Paizo doesn't hate magic and they don't seek to create a sterilised, bureaucratic idea of balance for its own sake. It's about creating a system with engaging gameplay that's tightly power capped, to avoid escalation beyond the GM and narrative's potential to challenge. Magic was simply the biggest offender of this in older editions, and thus the most obvious target to change the precedent.
This obviously won't be for everyone. And it doesn't mean the system is beyond criticism within the scope of that intended design. More nuanced points can be understandable; for example, I personally think there is room to give single target blaster casters more spells and utility to help with that focus for players who want that without necessarily stepping on martial characters’ toes. I also think there's a fair criticism in how spell attack rolls are less accurate than martial attack rolls, while rarely getting the full benefits of scaling successes other spells do.
But it's important to keep in mind the design goals. A lot of people will say spellcasting feels weak, but as discussed, there is a lot of bias towards the idea of people conceiving spellcasting as being innately more powerful than other options, be it consciously or subconsciously. I think it's important to acknowledge and address those biases when discussing magic, lest we end up being out of sync with the intended design. Whether than intended design is good or preferential is a matter unto itself, but at least understanding it and not just assuming Paizo is incompetent or spiteful doesn't help, which is the conclusion I see a lot of in these discussions surrounding magic in 2e.
In Conclusion (Don't worry, I'm almost done)
With Secrets of Magic coming out later this year, I'm curious to see if Paizo will be implementing new or alternate systems that shake up the base design. They've made it clear CRB, APG, and the first 3 bestiaries are their 'core' line that make up the bulk of the system's chassis, so I'm personally anticipating they'll use books like SoM to grant variant or alternate systems for people who want those higher magic experiences. But we'll get to that chestnut when it rolls around.
Either way, I think it has been interesting over the game's year and a half of being released how people have reacted to the idea of a system where martials and magic are the most balanced they've ever been. If nothing else, even if elements like this end up being a long term death knell for 2e (which I don’t think they will, but who knows how the system’s popularity will play out?), it raises some interesting points about how people perceive these ideas both mechanically and thematically. If magic truly is supposed to be superior to the mundane and can't be reconciled mechanically without being unappealing, perhaps that says something about the current class design of d20 systems? Do martials need to be more magical to remain viable? Is magic the inevitable design endpoint of all high fantasy-inspired gaming systems?
I don't know if it's that absolute, but it's interesting food for thought.
TLDR; no you're not getting one, read the whole thread you lazy fucks, also Paizano if you see this give magus the option for a floating weapon panoply because that would be cool AF.

An Exhaustive List of every known reference in Slay the Spire

I wanted to make a list for new players of all the cheeky references in the game. I stumbled upon this post from years ago by u/pokefinder2. https://www.reddit.com/slaythespire/comments/7yllts/spoilers_all_all_the_references_currently_hidden/
But it's not only out of date, it was missing things that were in the game back then. So here's my updated version. Please add any I missed in the comments, and I'll edit them in.
EDIT: Several changes were made based on feedback and a few statements by Megacrit. Thanks for your help.
RELICS:
Bird-Faced Urn: This is an amazing reference, so I listed it first. It’s a Canopic Jar from ancient egyptian myth, which you may recognize from the infamous jar cards from the Yu-Gi-Oh TCG. But it’s an even better version because the bird-faced canopic jar is known as the Qebehsenuef, the jar which holds the intestines of the Goddess Serqet. She is the goddess of, among other things, magic and healing. So when you use this relic - wait for it - you get healed when you use magic (aka powers).
Necronomicon: Is the name of the famous book in the works of H.P. Lovecraft, which first appeared in The Hound in 1923. It's original name is Kitab al-Azif.
Art of War: It is obviously a reference to Sun Zu, but more subtly, the effect of the relic is also a reference to one of Sun Zu's teachings on patience and allowing your enemy to advance toward you. It's strategic play channels the general spirit of the book.
Astrolabe: A horological device used to tell time by the position of the stars. Several of the relics reference horological devices, and I suspect that someone in charge at Megacrit is really into the obscure science of clock design. It’s just too complicated for me to get into here. But if I’m right, and you’re the dev who did this, I found it.
Black Star: References a song by David Bowie.
Blue Candle: References Blue Candle, an item from The Legend of Zelda. It's effect also wards off curses in the Zelda games.
Bowling Bash: References a Knight skill from the game Ragnorok Online.
Brimstone: References the item from Binding of Isaac, which is a reference to biblical descriptions of Hell.
Busted Crown: I hope this isn’t a reference to “Broken Crown” by Mumford and Sons
Calling Bell: References the Beckoning Bell from Bloodborne, which, like the Calling Bell, provides benefits at a downside.
Centennial Puzzle: References the Millenium Puzzle from Yu-gi-oh.
Champion Belt: Is a reference to pugilistic sports, for which a belt like this is awarded as a prize. The relic's effect also revolves around boxing mechanics.
Charon's Ashes: Charon is the Greek God of rebirth (and other things). This references the way that exhaust provides block (or life) in STS.
Chemical X: This references the substance that is used in the opening sequence of The Powerpuff Girls to create the girls. The image for the relic references the black and white art style used in the opening.
Clockwork Souvenir: This is either a reference to A Clockwork Orange that I'm not aware of or a reference to horology, the study of time and the restoration of mechanical clocks.
Dead Branch: References the Dead Branch from Ragnarok Online.
Dolly's Mirror: Dolly was the name of the first sheep cloned by human scientists. In STS, the mirror clones one of your cards. Dolly's Mirror's are antique German mirrors with special wooden frames, that, in German folklore, have mystical properties. This is not widely known lore outside of German speaking countries, I had to go down an internet rabbit hole to find anything about it.
Du-Vu Doll: This one is bizarre. It's clearly a play on the word Voo-doo doll, but the effect of the relic doesn't really gel with what Voo-doo Dolls are used for in shamanism, or in popular media.
Emotion Chip: This is more of a trope than a reference, but artificial intelligence is often perceived to struggle with the idea of love or emotion or pain, and may lash out when it experiences it. The earliest reference I know of to this trope is 1956's The Last Question by Isaac Asimov.
Enchiridion: References the Enchirdion from Adventure Time.
Fossilized Helix: References the helix fossil from Pokemon.
Golden Eye: Obviously a reference to the eponymous James Bond book, film, and video game. The latter was a pillar of early video game culture and is probably the origin of the reference. The effect sort of references the spy satellite in the book/movie/game. Commenters provided another valid explanation that this is a reference to the Millenium Eye from Yu-Gi-Oh!, which would also explain the relic’s function and relate to Centennial Puzzle.
Golden Idol/Bloody Idol: This references the golden idol from Indiana Jones.
Happy Flower: References the sun flower from Plants vs. Zombies
Hand Drill: References the comically oversized drills from Gurren Lagann. I love this show, and I can’t believe I didn’t get this one before the devs chimed in.
Inserter: References the Inserter item from Factorio!
Kunai/Shuriken/ninja scroll: Probably references Naruto, although it could just be general ninja tools.
Lee's Waffle: References Lee, friend of the developer- he had a waffle machine at work.
Letter opener: Probably references Sting, the sword wielded by Bilbo and Frodo in the Lord of the Rings, which Tolkein sometimes calls “the letter opener” in the books.
Lizard Tail: We have our first animal reference! Most lizards have evolved the ability to detach their tails from their body. This is done in case a predator has bit or caught them by the tail. By sacrificing it, they can get out of a lethal encounter just once, just like the relic.
Magic Flower: This is a somewhat obscure euphemism for marijuana. I wouldn't include it except that the relic makes healing more effective, which is an anecdotally observed result of smoking marijuana for medical reasons.
Mango: This is a reference to the greatest super smash bros melee player of all-time, PPMD.
Maw Bank: The Maw is a Lovecraftian-adjacent concept referenced in all kinds of popular media from Halo to World of Warcraft to Futurama to Star Wars. It’s a sort-of up made word for a void or strange, dark place or dimension where there are usually disgusting monsters. This odd looking whale on the relic image would seem to be such a monster. What it has to do with banking I have no idea. UPDATE: This is just a piggy bank stylized in the lovecraftian aesthetic.
Meat on the Bone: This is a reference to a popular meme from Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair. In the trial you had to assemble a four word phrase, and it was too challenging because there were other valid combinations besides Meat on the Bone.
Melange: References the spice from Dune.
Membership Card: Given Megacrit's love for the Legend of Zelda and their other LoZ references, this might be a nod to the Gerudo Membership card in Ocarina of Time, but there's no way to be sure.
Nilry's Codex: References Codex. A tabletop game by Sirlin (Nilry is Sirlin backwards), a game designer.
Oddly Smooth Stone: This could be a reference to tons of things, but it is certainly a reference to something. My best guess is the Sorcerer’s Stone from Harry Potter, or later, the Resurrection Stone. Although I think those are also references of their own taken by J.K. Rowling from Arabic myth. It could be a reference to the stone David used against Goliath.
Orrery: An orrery is a real life device used in astrology. It has since been used in the show Lovecraft Country on HBO, but it’s likely just a coincidence or a mutual reference.
Orange Pellets: References yellow pellets from Dark Souls.
Pear: The relic itself is just the third in a line of healing fruit… but the art is a reference to the biting pear of salamanca, an early internet meme, and, presumably, a real life work of art.
Philosopher’s stone: references the eponymous stone which grants eternal life. Made popular by Harry Potter and J.K. Rowling, called the “sorcerer’s stone” in the United States.
Prismatic shard: is a reference to the multicolor strategy in Magic: The Gathering. The devs have stated this is a reference to an item in stardew valley of the same name. It might be a mutual reference.
Question Card: References the "? Card" from the Binding of Isaac.
Red Skull: Likely a reference to Captain America’s nemesis “The Red Skull.” This is a reach, but the Red Skull becomes more powerful in the MCU after being damaged by the soul stone, and the relic sort of does that. I’m not big on comics so maybe there’s a pre-MCU explanation for the way the relic works?
Self-forming Clay: references the ancient Hebrew myth of the Golem
Shovel: I actually do not think this is a deliberate reference to Shovel Knight. If it is, it's a lazy reference and the relic doesn't have anything to do with the game, and in fact, it contradicts the use of the shovel as a weapon. Update: The devs have stated it is from Shovel Knight.
Slaver’s Collar: References the metal bikini worn by Carrie Fisher in Return of the Jedi. Like in the movie, the relic is used to grant a last-ditch power boost when facing a disgusting monster. Slime Boss is himself a reference to Jabba the Hutt, who Leia used the collar to kill.
Sling of Courage: This is a biblical reference to the slingshot that David used to defeat Goliath, and its effect references how David was an underdog.
The Specimen: Visually references Kaiman from Dorohedoro.
Stone Calendar: A reference to the Mayan astronomical calendar, which some really dumb people interpreted to signal the end of the world in the year 2012, even though there was literally no evidence and everyone who studied Mayan civilization said it was dumb. But it was kind of a meme back when STS was in development. The meme infers that after great periods of time, there will be apocalyptic destruction, which ties in to the way the relic works.
The Sundial: Yet another horology reference.
Tingsha: These are an instrument used in Tibetan Buddhism. Tingsha are used to make offerings to ghosts in real life, and their effect is somewhat like that, dealing damage to random enemies when cards are discarded.
Torii: References a japanese shrine gate, as popularized in the west by the film Rashumon.
Toxic Egg: References the art style of the poster from the 1997 film, Alien.
Unceasing top: A reference to the film Inception. In the movie, Dom uses a spinning top to determine if he’s dreaming or not, and if the top doesn’t stop spinning, he’s still in a dream. Without spoiling the movie, this imagery features in the infamous final scene.
Vajra: References a gauntlet-style weapon used by Tibetan warrior monks. It is said to imbue strength and durability, like the relic in the game.
Violet Lotus: References the famous MtG card called Black Lotus.
Void Essence: references an item in Stardew Valley.
White Beast Statue: In Chinese myth, white jade idols were used for worshiping Gods. I’m not clear of their relationship to apothecaries, but it’s pretty clear from some Chinese web pages I can’t translate.
Wing Boots: In Greek and Latin myth, Hermes and Mercury have winged feet and use them to fly. Although, I suspect that Megacrit is actually referencing Pit from Kid Icarus, who is a reference to Hermes, and Icarus, who used the boots to fly close to the sun and burn his wings. The devs have stated this references the Boots of Travel from Dota, but it’s clearly a mutual reference to greek/latin myth.
POTIONS:
Fairy in a Bottle: References the Legend of Zelda. In this game, you can put a fairy in a bottle, and when you die, the fair resurrects you. Nintendo didn’t invent this reference, but Megacrit is clearly nodding to Zelda, as it often does.
Ambrosia: References the ancient greek nectar that gave healing and heavenly blessing. It’s also a real food.
Ghost in a Jar: Probably a reference to the manga, Ghost in a Shell, or it could be a mutual reference, or it could be another reference to ancient egyptian canopic jars.
Liquid Memories: This could refer to The Pensive in Harry Potter, where memories are stored as liquids in a cauldron, or it might refer to Liquid Luck from Harry Potter, which is a silvery liquid that Harry uses to steal a memory, or it could be a mutual reference.
CARDS:
Sever Soul: A Dungeons and Dragons spell performed by Warlocks and a Hearthstone card in the Warlock class. Edit: The Hearthstone care is called Siphon Soul.
Double Tap: Probably a reference to a joke from the movie Zombieland, which is notable for the sequel in development at the same time as Slay the Spire.
Limit Break: The effect, name, and art are all inspired by Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy, although I don’t think Square Enix was the original creator of the idea, they certainly popularized it.
Bane: Possibly a reference to the Batman villain who was notable at the time of STS development for Tom Hardy’s portrayal in the Dark Knight Rises. The card art looks a bit like the comic book art of Bane, and both reference poison.
Deadly Poison: references the iconic Hearthstone card… which I think might reference an MtG card as well? Or maybe a DnD spell?
Flying Knee: Possibly a reference to Captain Falcon from Super Smash Bros.
Backstab: Another identical version of a Hearthstone card of the same name, in the class that’s very similar to Hearthstone’s rogue class.
Blur: I’m not sure if this is an actual tribute to STS player The Crimson Blur, or if it’s just a meme. If it is a tribute, why didn’t Megacrit give him a red card? UPDATE: I’m being told it isn’t but I want to hear it from the man himself.
Bouncing Flask: This looks like another reference to the opening cinematic of The Powerpuff Girls.
Caltrops: Probably a reference to caltrops in competitive Pokemon.
Catalyst: Possibly another reference to the opening sequence of The Powerpuff Girls.
A Thousand Cuts: A reference to a semi-accurate myth about Chinese torture practices.
Die Die Die: References Reaper from Overwatch, both in art and the name of the card.
Glass Knife: Relates to a german parable about how glass knives look fancy but aren’t durable. However, I think Megacrit’s use is a reference to Ocarina of Time’s use of the glass knife sword, which breaks down quickly when used.
Blizzard: A reference to the Hearthstone card just like it, which is itself a tongue-in-cheek reference to Blizzard Entertainment, which published Hearthstone.
Hello World: references the common practice of writing computer programs to spell out the message “hello world” early in development as a test of displaying language.
Rip and Tear: references the Doom video game franchise and specifically the popular marketing campaign for Doom: Eternal.
Hyperbeam: references the Pokemon move of the same name.
Consecrate: References the Hearthstone card with the same name and effect.
Third Eye: References the hindu third eye, or all-seeing eye.
Like Water: A reference to the motto of Bruce Lee, and the name of his book.
Sands of Time: Probably a reference to Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.
Discovery: References the Hearthstone mechanic called Discover, which generally does what this card does.
Mind Blast: References the hearthstone card of the same name and effect, which is itself a World of Warcraft spell.
Panacea: references the greek goddess of the same name who can cure any ailment, just like the potion it provides.
J.A.X: A play on the word “jacked” meaning, to get stronger.
ENEMIES:
Cultist: Cults are prominent throughout Lovecraftian mythology, and the bird cultist is probably a Shantak cultist.
Slimes: reference Lovecraft’s Tsathoggua slimes. The purple ooze from the gold event looks more like the way these are described.
Louses: Reference Yuggs from lovecraftian myth.
Slavers: They kind of look like the Glaaki from lovecraftian myth.
Snecko: Lovecraft has tons of snake monsters, most notably the Hunter’s from Beyond.
Fungal Beast: A reference to Lovecraftian Ithria, and also real life fungal vampirism.
Lagavulin: They kind of look like the Yith from Lovecraftian myth. They are absolutely not a reference to the town of Lagavulin in Scotland. Or, if they are, it makes no sense. Update: This really does reference the town in Scotland.
Book of Stabbing: There’s a lot going on here. It could be yet another Harry Potter reference to the Chamber of Secrets. It might reference 1001 Arabian Nights.
Head: References Ozymandias.
Slime Boss: references Jabba the Hutt from Star Wars, and Hutts in general.
The Time Eater: Appears to be an old-one inspired by the Dreamland from lovecraftian myth.
EVENTS:
Face trader: A reference to Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask.
Transmogrifier: This is NOT a Calvin and Hobbes reference. It’s a reference to Lovecraft, and the transmogrification running gag in Calvin and Hobbes is also a Lovecraft reference.
Match and Keep: This is a reference to 1001 Arabian Nights, and also the game memory, which is inspired by the events that inspired the book.
The Wheel of Chance: References the popular game show, Wheel of Fortune!
Hypnotizing Colored Mushrooms: Besides the obvious drug reference, this is a call back to the Ithria from lovecraftian myth.
N’loth: N’loth, and the many mentions of him in this game, are a reference to the old one, Zoth-Ommog, also called N’zoth.
OTHER:
The merchant’s line, “stay a while and listen” is a reference to Decard Cain from Diablo II.

Year 2 FIRE Update - Corona/2020 Edition : 35, $1.1M - Luck, Stumbles, Dedication, and Thrift - An 11 Year Journey to FI

2020 has certainly not been the year I had planned. How did my second year of RE go amidst COVID-19 and everything else that happened in 2020? Read on to find out! :-)
As usual, I've provided the TL/DR up front, but encourage you to read the qualitative details in the body of the post as I think that a story is so much more than just some numbers and bullet points.
For those who aren't familiar with my story, here are links to the Original Post from early 2019 and 1 Year Update in early 2020.
TL/DR:
Next parts I'll break into sub-headings if you want to go to specific parts:

Life in a Time of Covid

2020 will almost certainly be remembered and defined by COVID and the changes that came from it. I have a friend who was already ringing alarm bells by mid-January about its possible impact, so I had some time to process and mentally prepare for things once the shelter-in-place orders actually hit in March.
Despite being a fairly low risk to severe impacts of COVID (relatively young and no conditions that pre-dispose myself to severe complications), I chose to take what most would consider to be low risk approach for reasons including, but not limited to, wanting to minimize my potential risk to others and that the long-haul effects of the virus are still very unknown. I have the privilege of not needing to work and put myself at risk and I want to ensure that I'm not contributing to the risk of those who don't have a choice and/or are vulnerable.
Note: Everyone has their own situation and I'm not attemtping to shame anyone for their personal choices. As someone who is part of the queer community, I think the AIDS crisis is a good, but imperfect, analogy and lesson at how shaming does not work and discussion of harm reduction is the most effective tactic. The limitation of that analogy is that you are effectively only putting yourself and your sexual partners at risk, whereas with COVID, you could really be harming a lot more people who haven't opted in to your risk profile. In short, there are personal decisions that people need to make like seeing their family or having some companionship, but I will in no way condone egregious actions like large unmasked gatherings.
As an extroverted person who would host regular board game nights, go rock climbing with my climbing partner at the gym, see theater productions, go to board game conventions with thousands of people, and travel to multiple international destinations each year, this year has certainly been difficult. It isn't the year I planned, but I have tried to make the best of it as possible.
How have I adapted to varying shelter in place orders and tried to salvage a pretty bad year?
Basically - Discord and online video/board games have been keeping me sane.

Major Life Events

Content/Trigger warning - Death and suicide mentioned in the next set of bullet points

Finances

Net Worth: Increased from $1.40M to $1.61M
Income: Dividends + Capital Gains: $18,100 (The Capital Gains were via distributions, not sale of investments)
Spending: $30,600 out of $33,500 budget. My budget at my current net worth would represent a 2.1% withdrawal rate
The linked image provides my 2020 Budget, 2020 Actual Spend, and Differences.
You'll note that there are some big differenes in planned versus actual, namely my travel spend was virtually non-existant and I decided that I wanted to donate more to charity this year given that I have more than enough and there were many people and organizations that didn't have enough. Below lists out my notable notable big ticket expenditures for the year.
My food budget shrank significantly as I didn't eat out and rarely did take out - it was only $3500 out of a $6000 budget. I still ate well, but did a lot more home-cooking and simpler food - a lot of stuff that my mom would make for me as a kid. I fully expect that my food budget will go up once COVID restrictions lift, but I imagine that they won't go back to pre-COVID spending levels.
For 2021 I will keep my budget the same at $33,500 but will likely come in way under it with my non-charity expenses, but I will probably end up covering the difference by contributing more to charities.
FIRE Actions:
Lean FIRE "Trial-Run"
If there was one silver lining 2020 with respect to FIRE, 2020 showed me that a realistic lean FIRE number for me would be around $23,000, which were my expenses this year excluding my charitable contributions and my two big ticket purchases. At my current net worth, this would represent a 1.43% withdrawal rate. I don't plan to spending less money than my FIRE budget of $33,500 - but it shows me that I have a lot of flexibility to adapt IF I absolutely needed to.

Notable experiences since my last update:

Despite 2020 being a pretty awful year in general, there were a few notable things non-financial experienices/accomplishments that are worth mentioning:

Reflection of 2020 Goals and Forecasting 2021 Goals

2020 Goals
As you can see I didn't meet any of my goals for year 2, but that's COVID for ya. I would still like to do the first three goals at some point (probably not 2021 at this rate) but realized that I no longer would like to do NOLS/Outward bound. So what are my new goals for the upcoming year? I have to temper it given that I am pretty low on the list to get vaccinated and the world is probably going to still be uncertain. The basis of these goals is based on if they can be done solo and/or with people without specific skillsets (hard to find people with the right skills to pod with and have similar risk profiles) and don't require me to be vaccinated (assuming that for the in-person interaction, it will still be masked/socially distanced).
Hope you found the post enjoyable/informative/interesting and please leave any questions/comments below!

Looking for new rpg system, not satisfied with 5e

Hello there,
I've been playing dnd 5e for a year maybe closer to two, i'm not sure at this point. Sometimes we used to play weekly, sometimes we had a longer breaks but for the most part we did play and it was fun. Our dm was amazing he'd do the voices, incorporate his own ideas and lore and world and it was fun. We restarted campain like 3 times sadly for reason either dm was not having fun or we kinda lost interest but our first campain was the best immo. One player was also dm for other friends and they'd switch once or twice to run a oneshot and we'd run some different types of rpg with my og dm like star wars and i don't remember the name of this one but it had like these die that you either succed, failed or nothing happened and you made backstories together and based on that got attributes. Also played jojo rpg with the other dm but it kinda died after first ses.
With that i'd like to get something off my chest which i kinda missed or didn't like. To be fair some of these issues are partly our fault the party and dm and some are just maybe not worth the effort to homebrew. I hate that there are like 3 or for 4 classes WITHOUT spells in dnd 5e, and even those get some kind of subclass which GIVES them spells. Like i the non magic part of classes is kinda brushed off and neglected imo to say the least. Then there is equipment thing. Like i'm pretty sure that you can take your armor off and it takes some time based on the rule book but most of the time no one cares. Like do you sleep with your weapon or not, i heard only few times my dm ask me whether i want to take off my armor, and that's because i said i'm taking it off for short rest before that. After fight where i'm basicly a tank and almost die my armor should be in pretty bad stape and i should probably get it repaired but rule book is like nah fam, i got you homie. Same for swords, my dm was genuinely suprised when he saw whetstone in my inventory cause no one would bother with these details. I guess it might be simillar for mages when they ignore component costs or whatever it is but in our case we needed to have it cause the player who dm's other friends would go rule lawyering with the dm. Like you care if you have dust to cast idk but i just picked up a sword from a corpse in a cave and it deals the same dmg as brand new one. And like i wish i could interact more with the world which is kinda our fault but i do wish the world would interact with us more too, like i fell or walked in difficult terrain and my boots are destroyed and i needed to fix it somehow, either get new boots or wrap my feet in somethimg so it wouldn't hurt (monks will be probably fine). There are even cobbler tools but it's basicly yes it's in the game and go ahead and homebrew them. I know i can make boots in the free time but there is nothong said about patchimg things up.
I am sorry for my rant and i know that dnd 5e is cut down simplified version of the "full" game but i just find it sad how non magic classes are neglected, like yes there are few good subclasses but i wish if there isn't going to be as much non casters as caster at least make them all decently good in quality.
As i said before i tried jojo rpg, star wars dnd 5e with and without modules, superheroes and cyberpunk red but we either lost interest or it didn't work like cuberpunk red, because most of us wanted to have some augmentation at the start but there were kinda strong and expensive and it would mess up balancing of the team and enemies. I'm not sure if i'll be able to play tabletop rpg with my friends soon because of covid and we also went our ways cause uni but we can still play online through discord. I'm not the heaviest role playing player but i do like to interact with a world, wheter it's drinking local beer in taver or finding a flower in forest it's important to me
And comming to the main topic of this post, i would like to ask if you can recommend any rpgs that are set or playable in "medieval" fantasy setting which is immersive and interactive, not just like here is enemy and there is a object you can loot and over there is a castle where you can talk with people, what about nature, what about equipment getting destroyed or maybe breaking a leg. I had a talk with dm and he said that pathfinder might be better for me but out of ~8 people only three would agree and homebrowing these things into 5e will most likely not be worth effort if only 2 of players will actualy use it.
Thank you for your time

Looking to make friends in Sydney?

Some background: About a year or so ago I realized I didn’t have many friends. The high school friends had drifted away and the few university friends I had made were busy too. You don’t realise it until one day, how lonely you suddenly feel. I remember trying to tell myself its okay and trying to bury the sadness somewhere inside.
One day, I’m sitting on the train home – browsing through reddit and see this post.
I saved the post and asked for a discord invite when I got home. That was back in April 2019 – what’s happened since then?
- Played many online games of scribbl, jackbox party pack, among us, minecraft, tabletop simulator (and all types of irl board games)
- Invited to lots of events (and went to a few) – yum cha, kbbq, breakfasts, brunches, lunches, picnics, dinners, dessert bars
- Talking about anything and everything, including hobbies – from crochet, to bouldering, to hiking, to board games, to planes, to anime, to 3D printing, plant babies and what’s good to see on Netflix right now
And most importantly, met a lot of interesting, funny, lovely people who turned into friends along the way. There always someone around who wants to chat, no matter the time of day or night.
Maybe you are in a similar spot as I once was – browsing through reddit, thinking how do I make friends.

Come hang out for a day or stay for a while, we’re on discord here:

WSE:CDR CD Projekt Red Analysis. Is it undervalued after the 37% drop due to Cyberpunk problems on consoles?

Background
CD PROJEKT S.A. (WSE: CDR) is a Polish video game developer, publisher and distributor based in Warsaw. CD Projekt Red, best known for The Witcher series and the recent release of Cyberpunk 2077.
The CD PROJEKT Group currently conducts operating activities in two key segments: CD PROJEKT RED and GOG.com (originally as Good Old Games).
Hierarchy
CD PROJEKT Capital Group is headed by CD PROJEKT S.A. A holding company which has five subsidiaries.
The subsidiaries are:
- GOG sp. z o.o (Similar to Steam, it is a distributor of games).
- CD PROJEKT Inc (Where all the game development happens)
- CD PROJEKT Co. Ltd (Only for selling games in China)
- Spokko sp. z o.o. (The mobile arm of CD projekt red)
- CD PROJEKT RED STORE sp. z o.o. (A new store of merchandise launched by the company)
GOG - Who have just released a 2.0 version called GOG Galaxy which subsequently entered its beta testing phase. The goal of the application is to enable players to integrate all their game shelves into a single library, to communicate with friends and to track their progress regardless of their preferred gaming platforms. Its functionality will span PC and console platforms, extending beyond the GOG.com user base. It's main selling points are that is uses the cloud, is DRM free and has a ton of old games such as Diablo, Destroy all humans etc on it's platform that Steam doesn't.
Steam is the single biggest distributor of digital games for PC, it's been dominating the market for years and has way more games than GOG does due to this. Especially as a lot of publishers do not want to host their games DRM free which GOG requires. It's very difficult to predict the future of GOG because Steam is a private company so we don't have access to it's numbers.
However the big benefit of GOG is that CD Projekt Red can sell and promote it's games directly through their own platform. The benefit being a much bigger margin on each game sold as 100% of the profit goes to CD Projekt red if a game is sold on GOG, whereas on Steam they take a 20% cut for the first $50m revenue of Cyberpunk. One third of all digital PC preorders for Cyberpunk 2077 sales were on GOG which is an incredible achievement by CD Projekt Red considering Steams dominance.
This is probably the reason why CD Projekt Red has such a huge operating margin from 30% to 50% in recent years. They are involved in the entire process of making and selling their games.
GWENT: The Witcher Card Game is the first multiplayer game developed by the CD PROJEKT Group. It has been a hugely successful and highly rated game (which is impressive considering it's their first mobile multiplayer game). The reason why this game is important for the future is because multiplayer is the key to the cash machine which is microtransactions which the card game has.
Cyberpunk was released recently and had been in development for many years. It's sold very well but less than analysts expectations and there has been serious problems on console versions which led to sony removing cyberpunk 2077 from it's PS store for the time being. This caused the companies stock to plummet 37% recently.
I'll get into the numbers at the bottom for my reverse DCF that I did.
Cyberpunk Online multiplayer will definitely come at some point within the next couple of years. The reason being is that after GTA Onlines unbelievable success and constant revenue generation for Take Two then it makes sense to try and replicate this with Cyberpunk. This multiplayer will feature microtransactions and in my opinion is the way Cd Projekt red can really make the big $$ in the future. Microtransactions for cosmetic items like in game skins or packs (like fifa) are easy to implement and have huge operating margins as they take 0 CAPEX and virtually no time to implement due to being some simple code and designs. Here's a quote taken from their 2019 Annual Report for Key Sources Of Revenue:
■ sales carried out through optional microtransactions in GWENT: The Witcher Card Game (incl. kegs and meteorite dust) via GOG, proprietors of console platforms (PlayStation, Xbox) and App Store (Apple)
Risks
There are some huge risks with cd projekt red, here are the main ones:
- Neither IP, The Wither or Cyberpunk 2077 is owned by CD Projekt since the two series are based on a series of novels and a tabletop RPG respectively. So they would need permission from these license holders (the creators I think) to be able to do other spin offs for them. While it is likely the permission will be given due to the huge successes it's not a certainty.
- CD Projekt Red relies on a couple of block busters to make 80% of their revenue and earnings. The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 are the only revenue generates the company has (apart from GOG). If CD Projekt red messes up either of these huge IP's in the future (or like they just have with the console versions of Cyberpunk) then you can expect a huge and sudden stock price drop and potential damage to the company.
- Because of the few but huge releases, CD Projekt Red has very volatile earnings and revenue making it very hard to predict, similar to Take Two Interactive. You can see in the following picture how sales drop a lot after release.
Co-Founders and Board History
CD PROJEKT has a very long tenure of the management board, all at least 10 years and 3/5 of them 20+ years. Insiders have a significant stake in CD Projekt red's stock, including the joint CEO's. This is great news for shareholders as the insiders have a big incentive to make the company work as they have big stakes in the company.
Company shareholding structure is made up of the following people:
- Marcin Iwinski (Joint CEO & Co-Founder) is 13%
- Michal Kicinski (Ex Joint CEO & Co-Founder) is 11%
- Piotr Nielubowicz (VP, CFO) is 6%
- Adam Kicinski (President & Joint CEO) is 3%
Incentives for management:
Management goals are based 80% on net earnings and 20% on SP over the WIG index.
These are poor goals in my opinion. Net earnings can be enhanced by poor acquisitions and stock price is meaningless and should be ignored in incentives as it can produce short term motivations.
Management hit the majority of their goals for year 2019.Their goals going forward:
Goals for 2020-2025 Aggregate Net Income: 8,300 PLN or 1,660 PLN a year.
Optimistic goals for 2020-2025 Aggregate Net Income: 10,000 PLN or 2,000 PLN a year.
These goals seem too high in my opinion. Especially after their cyberpunk flop on consoles but it's still possible.
Competitors
CD PROJEKT is well known for its biggest sales on The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077 hype. However, there’s a lot of gaming industries that compete with one another.
Thus comparing its competitors such as Take-Two Interactive, Electronic Arts (EA), Activision Blizzard has more diversified games and games produced more frequently compared to CD PROJEKT RED.
CD Projekt Red's risk in terms of competitors is releasing a big game that clashes with another big game such as GTA 6. However all gaming companies have a good tailwind right now due to COVID restrictions and microtransactions are lifting all gaming companies margins. A rising tide lifts all boats.
Industry
- CAGR 2019-2024 Video games and e-sports growth expected to be 7% (source: PWC Global Entertainment & Media Outlook 2020–2024).
- In 2019 the strongest strong growth was observed in the mobile and console segments. The former grew by 9.7%, reaching 68.2 billion USD, while the latter grew by 7.3%, reaching 45.3billion USD. The PC market reached a volume of 35.3 billion USD, having increased by 2.8%.The largest share of the global videogame market is currently held by mobile devices (46%), 80% of which are smartphone releases. Gaming consoles come in second at 30%, followed by the PC 24%. Mobile devices are projected to retain their top position, with their corresponding market volume increasing by 11.2% annually (on average) over the next three years. According to estimates, the volume of the global mobile game market will reach 93.6 billion USD by 2022 (it currently stands at 68.2 billion USD).
You can see from the above as to why CD projekt red is branching out to smartphones and China.
Reverse DCF
Here's the original post and reverse DCF because stocks does not allow images: https://www.reddit.com/UndervaluedStonks/comments/kofhq7/wsecdr_cd_projekt_red_analysis_is_it_undervalued/
Conclusion
It's been extremely difficult to project CD Projekt Red and even after doing research I am still very unsure on a bunch of variables. In my opinion the markets assumptions of CD Projekt Red's growth and margins as shown above in the reverse DCF is perfectly acceptable to me. Therefore I would not buy their shares unless they dipped to around 210 zloty~ as I don't think they are undervalued yet. given the risks.
Please comment if you see anything wrong with my valuation. This was a very difficult one for me.
Thanks
